MP & UADB Present the territorial information system project to Local authorities and Representatives of the Diourbel region
The Alioune Diop University of Bambey (UADB) and Millennium Promise (MP) have initiated the implementation of a territorial information system project for the region of Diourbel. This project is part of the support of local authorities for the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Senegal, using Diourbel as a pilot region. The project consists in developing a territorial information system which incorporates multi-level and multi-sectoral data about the current state of health, education and water for instance; in regards to the implementation of the SDGs in the Diourbel region. The information system which will be made available to the administrative authorities and local elected representatives of Diourbel, will serve as a planning tool both at municipal level, at the departmental and regional level.
In the perspective of implementing the project in question, a meeting was held in the Multimedia Room of the UADB on Thursday, March 22, 2018 with attendance from mayors, county council presidents and department heads of the Diourbel region.
In his welcoming speech, the Rector of UADB, Professor Lamine GUEYE, emphasized on the importance of the project for the region of Diourbel and the need for the involvement of local elected representatives in its implementation. Professor Lamine GUEYE also praised the commitment of the administrative authorities of the region in this project as well as he stated his belief that the collaboration between, UADB, MP, the services and local authorities as well as other stakeholders of the Diourbel region was necessary for the good implementation of the project.
Moustapha Ndiaye, Prefect of the Diourbel Department, representing the Governor of the Diourbel region, said that local authorities in the region are strategic actors and beneficiaries of this information system project which will be a tool for local development. He requested the contribution of all stakeholders including the administrative services, the communes and the departmental councils of the region as well as the UADB and Millennium Promise for the collection and the treatment of the data until the presentation of the final version of the project document.
In his speech, Dr. Amadou Ibra NIANG, Chief Executive Officer of Millennium Promise gave a more detailed presentation of the project by focusing on the technical, institutional and financial aspects of it. Dr. Coura KANE, Teacher-Researcher in the Sustainable Development Department of UADB, presented the chronogram for the implementation of the project which should be completed by end of June 2018.
The local representatives attending the meeting expressed their appreciation as well as commitment to supporting this project.
In conclusion, the Rector thanked the elected representatives for their favorable reactions and reiterated the commitment of the UADB to support the local authorities and the services of the region of Diourbel within the framework of the service to the community which is a new mission of the Senegalese university.
