Our work is possible because of the motivation and willingness of partners around the world to combine their efforts, merge their ideas, join forces with communities in Africa, and pursue the common goal of together ending extreme poverty.
Millennium Promise is a United States-based non-profit organization working to achieve the Millennium Development Goals in Africa. Millennium Promise was created in part to engage the public and donors in support for the Millennium Villages project. Core activities include raising funds from the private sector, working with partner organizations to support the project and engaging the business community in the development of markets around the Villages.
Our founding partner in the Millennium Villages Project, the Earth Institute is the world's leading academic center for the integrated study of the Earth, its environment, and society. From the Modi Research Group’s technology breakthroughs to the Tropical Agriculture and Rural Environment Program’s advances in soil fertility management, EI provides world-class research and expertise on the development of science-based solutions for the Project.
Partnerships with countries hosting the Millennium Villages Project are essential to the success of the initiative. We engage host country government at all levels—national, regional, and local—in the planning and execution of the Project, as well as the support for major infrastructure projects, elimination of health care user fees, and more. We also work with national governments to scale up the MVP approach in their economic development plans.
Currently, we partner with 10 countries in sub-Saharan Africa: Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Tanzania, and Uganda.
The Open Society Foundations (OSF) have been a critical supporter of Millennium Promise and the Millennium Villages Project from the very beginning. The OSF provides comprehensive support and leadership across a range of implementation, policy, and business development activities. Working to build vibrant and tolerant democracies whose governments are accountable to their citizens, the Open Society Foundations implement a range of initiatives to advance justice, education, public health, and independent media. The Foundations place a high priority on protecting and improving the lives of people in marginalized communities.
From partnering on major public health initiatives to purchasing crop surplus for regional food aid distribution, to providing administrative, operational, and technical support, our multilateral partners help translate our efforts into high-impact action. These partners also support the scaling up of the Millennium Villages Project to the national level.
In partnership with Millennium Promise, individuals, corporations, and foundations leverage their expertise, resources, and technology to help in many ways. Their ingenuity and commitment is increasing crop yields to reduce hunger, and fighting back malaria to lessen the burden of disease. Creative, socially-driven minds figured out a way to turn consumption in affluent countries into school meals for primary school children through an innovative fundraising model. Manufacturers are providing water pipes and fertilizer, engineers are developing off-grid systems to provide energy to remote communities, and individuals and foundations are supporting grain warehouses, revolving funds, and in some cases whole villages.
These partners generously support Millennium Promise and the Millennium Villages Project.
